Hearing from our members about the challenges they face in meeting demand for green chemistry, we’re excited to help identify how GC3 can help brands, formulators, and chemical manufacturers address these matters. Come meet with us to help shape the direction of a new supply chain dialogue around your needs. From this dialogue, we will build a GC3 working group dedicated to product supply chains, providing a space for sharing, delivering information and creating dialogue around the needs to advance the development and implementation of green chemistry solutions.

Green Chemistry Education Landscape

The GC3 has a robust history of supporting Green Chemistry education through the development of a Policy Statement on Green Chemistry in Higher Education, the establishment of a green chemistry internship program, and the creation of web-based materials for supporting safer chemistry training for businesses. Going forward, working through partnerships with green chemistry education leaders, the GC3 will help guide the development of new in-depth programming that meets the needs of businesses. Green chemistry skills are essential in providing current and future scientists as well as other disciplines with the skills to design and select safer, less hazardous chemical products and processes. This session will provide direction for future collaborative work through green chemistry education leaders such as Beyond Benign, ACS Green Chemistry Institute, and leading higher education institutions.

Advancing Bio-based Materials Through Supply Chain Partnerships

Bio-based alternatives offer promise in an era of increasing concern about impacts along the plastics lifecycle. At the same time, there are significant challenges for brands seeking to incorporate bio-based plastics into their products. Supply chain collaboration is the key to maximizing the benefits of bio-based materials. This panel presents two case examples of brand owner-chemical supplier collaborations to adopt bio-based materials in product lines. It will focus on lessons learned to increase adoption and scale.

Taking Action on Paint Strippers: Retailers and Suppliers Report from the Field

Paint strippers made headlines in the US last year. But it’s not that easy to identify, market, and adopt safer alternatives. Come learn from Kingfisher about the EU experience following regulation of paint strippers containing methylene chloride in 2012. Lowe’s will discuss its efforts to eliminate paint strippers containing methylene chloride and NMP. The Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI) will share research about regrettable substitutes currently on the market. Startup remooble and TURI will discuss paint stripper alternatives they have developed and the challenges they face in market adoption.

Models for Advancing Green Chemistry Innovation: Collaborative Innovation, Open Innovation, Incubators, and Accelerators

The GC3’s Collaborative Innovation Program is constantly evolving its own models to accelerate green chemistry innovation, identifying other collaborative models, and partnering with companies and other strategic organizations. Hear details about Nouryon’s Imagine Chemistry Program; Fashion for Good’s Innovation Platform; and NineSigmas’ Circular Materials Challenge with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and Material Recovery Challenge with Nike.  Then, in breakout groups, talk about how you can leverage these models and work with these organizations to increase the impact of your green chemistry programs.

Use of safer chemicals is a critical enabler of circularity. Three leading companies are developing new materials, products and lifecycle product management systems based on green chemistry and circular economy principles. Flooring company Tarkett, office products company Steelcase, and product design startup and carpet producer Niaga will share emerging thinking on new materials development, supply chain collaborations, information systems for tracking chemicals and materials in products, and the underlying sustainable business models and commitments that enable their work.

GC3 Project Updates (Concurrent Sessions)

Retailer Leadership Council (RLC)

The mission of the GC3 Retailer Leadership Council (RLC) is to promote safer chemicals, materials and products across retail supply and value chains. Current members of the RLC include: Amazon, Best Buy, CVS Health, Home Depot, Kingfisher, Lowe’s, Staples, Target, and Walmart. These retail leaders are working proactively to: develop and implement chemicals policies/strategies; understand which chemicals of concern are in their products; adopt safer alternatives that perform and are cost-effective; engage suppliers in improving chemicals management and using safer alternatives; and, educate customers about safer products. At this session, members of the RLC will provide an update on its work over the past year to identify priorities for chemical innovation and to develop a road map for increased transparency. The RLC is interested in engaging the entire supply chain in identifying next steps.

Sustainable Chemistry Alliance (SCA)

The GC3 Sustainable Chemistry Alliance is a diverse group of GC3 member companies working to advance federal policies supporting innovation, production and use of sustainable chemicals. The Alliance represents the entire value chain and 1.8 million jobs, and has earned significant credibility as a new advocacy group in Washington, DC. This session will recap work to date, explore the advocacy plan for 2019 and the opportunity for new GC3 members to join this group.

Collaborative Innovation

Many GC3 members are developing or seeking novel, safe and effective chemicals and will collaboratively develop, search for, evaluate, push to market and scale new solutions.  We will highlight the GC3's collaborative innovation models, how we choose targets, update on ongoing projects on plasticizers and siloxanes, and solicit ideas for new projects. We will also present an evolving partnership between the GC3 and ZDHC involving several approaches to collaborative innovation for the apparel and footwear sector, that can be scaled to other sectors. The GC3 would like to engage all GC3 members, across the value chain and in every sector, in one or more collaborative innovation projects to further their green chemistry goals.
